Apple introduced the Ipod in 2001. In this decade, many talk radio shows on AM radio were converted to podcasts. There has been a significant shift of radio use over the years. It went from being a news source, to entertainment, to background noise. In the 2000s, listening to music is a highly individual activity with the popularity of ipods and mp3 players.

In the 90s, radio was considered background noise. Most listeners were not actively listening, rather just having it on in the car, or using it for background music.

It was in the 1980s when TV use surpassed radio use. Also, in 1979 the Walkman was introduced. Personal radios dominated in this decade. In 1981 the first music video debuted on MTV, "Video Killed the Radio Star"

It wasn't until the late 1970s when FM radio listeners passed AM radio. During this time, AM radio became known as talk radio while FM radio was dominated by alternative rock music.

The use of radio began rapidly changing in the 1960s. With the popularity of TV, radio was no longer the #1 source of entertainment. Here a boy listens to the Beatles on his portable radio.

In the 1950s the jukebox was at the height of its popularity. Young people would put a quarter into the machine to hear the latest records.

1940s. Since the Television has yet to be invented, the radio is still a very popular way to get news and entertainment. Often, listening to the radio was something you did as a family. Here, a family listens to the radio as Roosevelt gives one of his last fireside chats.

This week I've decided to show radio through the last 8 decades. In the 1930s, radio technology was still considered fairly new. The radio was famous for transmitting Roosevelt's fireside chats throughout WWII. This decade is also when radio began playing music. Here, band leader Fred Waring conducts a live radio show called "The Varsity Show."

Saw this sign over the weekend and thought it was really funny.
Two of my friends really getting into a goofy Mexican song in the car.

On the topic of Kony... The top picture is my cousin's facebook profile picture. She's 14, and a chronic "follower of the trends." The bottom picture is a screen shot of an article about the Kony movie maker's arrest this weekend. http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/315785/20120318/jason-russell-arrested-naked-video-kony-2012.htm
My sister's boyfriend was telling me about this funny ipod app. It's a game about the "man code" that goes on at urinals in the bathroom. Apparently the point of the game is to choose the most socially acceptable urinal to use in the bathroom when there is already someone in there.
At a McDonalds downtown, they used random magazine collages as window treatments. I thought it looked really weird and I couldn't figure out why they did it because there wasn't even a theme.

It was the first nice day of the week and my roommate was inside with the blinds closed, watching TV. Didn't make any sense to me!
This guy had some pretty incredible multitasking skills. He was texting someone with one hand and adjusting something on his ipod at the same time. I don't even know how that's possible! Both thumbs were doing different things simultaneously!

This video mirrors what we were talking about in class on Thursday perfectly! Researchers explain the main characteristics of the millenial generation. Main/interesting topics include use of technology/social media, political views, and economic impact.

While in St. Louis, they were holding auditions for America's Got Talent. It's crazy how many people just want to be on TV. The line was about a mile long!
This man was trying to make a living by playing music on the street. It was actually really nice walking around in that area and be able to enjoy some good live music.
I was really shocked by the lack of graffiti in St. Louis. Even in the very run-down areas, I couldn't really find any! Most of the city is built in brick and I wonder if there is an unspoken rule against graffiti because it is so difficult to wash off that type of material. This is a mural in a nicer part of the city and I really loved the vibrant colors.
Some of the people in my group were OBSESSED with the Hunger Games books. Here, Allie reads a magazine devoted to the upcoming movie.
Andrew's nonverbals express disgust as he is about to eat a worm.
At a BP gas station in St. Louis there were TVs at every pump! I don't understand why anyone would ever NEED to watch TV in the 5 minutes they are pumping gas.
Using newspapers in the gardens to help keep the weeds out.
Before break I went to see Mary Poppins the musical. While theater isn't considered traditional media, I think that it was one of the first types of media before the technology of movies and tv. I love musicals and I really feel that they capture an audience in a way that other forms of media can't.
